Bible Study Magazine

There is a new print magazine, Bible Study Magazine, from the folks who make the very fine Logos Bible software.

I know that seems a little strange that a software company would create a print magazine. I ordered a back issue of the first issue and I am very impressed. The magazine fills a very important and pretty much untapped focus. The magazine is definitely evangelical without being unnecessarily conservative. The layout is one of the most attractive I have seen in any print magazine. If you want to get a feel for what this magazine is about, there are several sample articles available online. The focus of the articles seem to be aimed at the interested layperson or pastor. Almost anyone could read this magazine with profit. The magazine is very reasonably priced at $14.95 for a one year subscription.

One of the articles that I enjoyed was the one entitled, “The Great Isaiah Scroll” by John D. Barry. Mr. Barry interviewed Dr. Peter Flint who believes he has a calling to show the importance of the Dead Sea Scrolls to those of the Christian faith. Dr. Flint spoke in a convincing fashion about how the Dead Sea Scroll reinforce the Christian faith. The other articles in this issue are top notch as well. There is an interview with the popular apologist, Josh McDowell and and interview with Dr. Mark Goodacre, the creator of that most excellent web resource for New Testament studies: the New Testament Gateway. There are some excellent tips on how to actually conduct your own personal Bible Study as well.

A True Champion

All too often these days, we hear much about the ills of our society or ill behavior of its individuals. Well, I am delighted to say that there are still individuals making a positive difference in this world. The Rev. Michael Dixon of First Christian Church in Paris, Illinois has been named the male Parisian Award winner of 2009. Considering Rev. Dixon’s long list of accomplishments, there could be no other individual worthy of this honor. Just a few of Rev. Dixon’s positive community endeavors are:

Supporter and organizer of the Salvation Army bell ringing program.
Organizing highway cleanup crews.
Organized a program whereby families in need can receive winter clothing.
Works with several community food basket projects.
Has served as United Way president, treasurer and on several UW committees.
Speaks regularly to various community groups including the Future Leaders Class of the Paris Chamber of Commerce.
Frequently delivers educational aids to local schools.
Helps provide free lunches to Paris High School students on two occasions each year.
Supports the school systems by providing counseling whenever there is a need.
Has served as a Youth Camp Counselor for 21 years.
Has held various offices in the Paris Ministerial Association.
Volunteers as a chaplain at the Paris Community Hospital.
Was instrumental in the founding of the Edgar County Homeless Organization.
Full time pastor at First Christian Church.

Through it all Rev. Mike has maintained a joyful, enthusiastic love for his calling and the people that enter his life on a daily basis while displaying excellence in all his endeavors. Rev. Mike would tell you that he does these things (and many more) because he feel them to be an honor and a privilege. In short, Rev. Mike is doing exactly what all Christians should be doing . . . . displaying the love of Christ to all no matter their social standing or their income or their recognition from others. It is truly refreshing to see that there still are heroes in this world. Rev. Mike stands very tall among them. In my mind, he may be the tallest. We should all work for the betterment of our circle of influence - Rev. Mike has given us an excellent example. Well done, good and faithful servant!

Book of the Year

It is no secret that my interests are in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament if you prefer) – especially Leviticus my favorite book of the Bible. I deem it essential for Christians to study the Hebrew Bible in order to have a proper understanding of the New Testament. Given that focus, I would say that the three most important books I have purchased in the last year or so are:

1) JPS Guide to the Bible

2) Etz Hayim

3) Jewish Study Bible

I would not want to be without any of these books in my library. However, pride of place should go to the JPS Guide to the Jewish Bible. The book examines nearly every aspect of the Hebrew Bible in a succinct yet highly informative manner. The book contains many helpful features, such as charts on various subjects, a glossary, maps, an excellent set of bibliographies and web resources. Each chapter or section is essentially an essay written by an eminent Jewish scholar on that particular subject. This is a book that I will undoubtedly wear out from constant use. I have found it be very helpful in clarifying the Jewish understanding of the Bible. The list of chapters are as follow:

2) How the Bible became “the Bible”
3) The Origins of the Hebrew text
4) The Torah Scroll
5) Public Reading of the Torah
6) A Short History of Bible Translations
7) The Matter of Gender in the JPS Torah Translation

10) Biblical Poetry
11) The Books of the Prophets
12) Wisdom Literature
13) Methods of Bible Study
14) Commentaries on the Bible
15) Midrash
16) Summaries of the Books of the Bible

The chapter on commentaries is well worth the very reasonable list price of $22. That chapter examines commentators and commentaries throughout the centuries. The commentators are listed by era with a short bibliography of each one. It even includes a very helpful list of available resources listed under each commentator. This is an excellent jumping off point for those desiring deeper study.

This book isn’t overly large – weighing in at only 291 pages. However, size does not equate to usefulness in this case. This is a book that will be utilized again and again by anyone with an interest in furthering their knowledge of the Hebrew Bible and the Jewish understanding of that wonderful book of scriptures.

This is definitely my book of the year – at least until I acquire the JPS Torah Commentaries.
